The very title of this book is borrowed from the information theory vocabulary,
and, quite naturally, it is an outline of this theory that will serve as an introduction.
The subject of information theory is the SCIENTIFIC study of communications. To this
end it defines a quantitative measurement of the communicated content, i.e. informa-
tion, and deals with two operations essential for communication techniques: source
coding and channel encoding.

This book is the outcome of the panel discussions held on the special event honor-
ing first 50 PhD students of Prof. Ramjee Prasad. Several of his PhD students are

Wireless communications has become a field of enormous SCIENTIFIC and economic interest. Recent
success stories include 2G and 3G cellular voice and data services (e.g., GSM and UMTS), wireless
local area networks (WiFi/IEEE 802.11x), wireless broadband access (WiMAX/IEEE 802.16x), and
digital broadcast systems (DVB, DAB, DRM). On the physical layer side, traditional designs typically
assume that the radio channel remains constant for the duration of a data block. However, researchers
and system designers are increasingly shifting their attention to channels that may vary within a block.
In addition to time dispersion caused by multipath propagation, these rapidly time-varying channels
feature frequency dispersion resulting from the Doppler effect. They are, thus, often referred to as
being “doubly dispersive.”

plore conceptual bridges between the fields of Automatic Control and Power
Electronics. The need to bring the two disciplines closer has been felt, for
many years, both by Power Electronics specialists and by Automatic Control
theorists, as a means of fruitful interaction between the two SCIENTIFIC com-
munities. There have, certainly, been many steps given in that direction in

We are very pleased to introduce the proceedings of the First EAI International
Conference on Smart Grid Inspired Future Technologies (SmartGIFT 2016). This was
the first SmartGIFT conference, aiming to create a forum for researches, developers,
and practitioners from both academia and industry to publish their key results and to
disseminate state-of-the-art concepts and techniques in all aspects of smart grids. The
37 SCIENTIFIC participants had many fruitful discussions and exchanges that contributed
to the success of the conference. Participants from 12 countries made the conference
truly international in scope.
