IEEE Std 1180-1990. IEEE Standard Specifications for the Implementations of 8x8 Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform, specifies the numerical characteristics of the 8x8 inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT) for use in visual Telephony and similar applications where the 8x8 IDCT results are used in a reconstruction loop. The specifications ensure the compatibility between different implementations of the IDCT.

H.264/AVC, the result of the collaboration between the ISO/IEC
Moving Picture Experts Group and the ITU-T Video Coding
Experts Group, is the latest standard for video coding. The goals
of this standardization effort were enhanced compression efficiency,
network friendly video representation for interactive
(video Telephony) and non-interactive applications (broadcast,
streaming, storage, video on demand). H.264/AVC provides
gains in compression efficiency of up to 50% over a wide range
of bit rates and video resolutions compared to previous standards.
Compared to previous standards, the decoder complexity
is about four times that of MPEG-2 and two times that of
MPEG-4 Visual Simple Profile. This paper provides an overview
of the new tools, features and complexity of H.264/AVC.

Over the past ten years there has been a revolution in the devel-
opment and acceptance of mobile products. In that period, cel-
lular Telephony and consumer electronics have moved from the
realm of science fiction to everyday reality. Much of that revolu-
tion is unremarkable – we use wireless, in its broadest sense, for
TV remote controls, car keyfobs, travel tickets and credit card
transactions every day. At the same time, we have increased the
number of mobile devices that we carry around with us. However,
in many cases the design and function of these and other static
products are still constrained by the wired connections that they
use to transfer and share data.

Wireless technologies like GSM, UMTS, LTE, Wireless LAN and Bluetooth have
revolutionized the way we communicate by making services like Telephony and Internet
access available anytime and from almost anywhere. Today, a great variety of technical
publications offer background information about these technologies but they all fall
short in one way or another. Books covering these technologies usually describe only
one of the systems in detail and are generally too complex as a first introduction. The
Internet is also a good source, but the articles one finds are usually too short and super-
ficial or only deal with a specific mechanism of one of the systems. For this reason, it
was difficult for me to recommend a single publication to students in my telecommunication
classes, which I have been teaching in addition to my work in the wireless telecommunication
industry. This book aims to change this.
