The aim of this book, the first of two volumes, is to present selected research that
has been undertaken under COST action IC0902 ‘‘Cognitive Radio and Net-
working for Cooperative Coexistence of Heterogeneous Wireless Networks’’
(http://newyork.ing.uniroma1.it/IC0902/). COST (European Cooperation in Sci-
ence and Technology) is one of the longest-running European frameworks sup-
porting cooperation among scientists and researchers across Europe.
This chapter introduces concepts on cooperating objects and wireless sensor net-
works that will be used in the following chapters. It also introduces the Embedded
WiSeNts Coordination action. Finally, it presents an overview of the book and the
relations between the following chapters.
This paper covers the keynote address delivered by the
Chairman of the COST action 285 at the Symposium. It outlines the
studies undertaken by the members of the action with the objective of
enhancing existing modeling and simulation tools and to develop new ones
for research in emerging multiservice telecommunication networks. The
paper shows how the scope of COST action 285 has been enriched by the
contributions made at the Symposium.
Some tine ago it become apparent the the first edition of this book was rapidly approaching its sell-by date,since many aspects needed revise.There were two obvious courses of action : to forget the whole thing and concentrate my energies on other pursuits such as golf or fishing, or to embark on a new edition.For several reasons Iwas persuaded that a new edition was a worthwhile endeavour;many people had made complimentary remakrs or written complinentary letters about the first edition and I understood that it had become a recommended text for several postgraduate coures.

planning of electric power systems. In addition, the book provides information and
tools for researchers working in the fields of power system security and stability. The
book consists of two volumes. The first volume provides traditional techniques for the
stability analysis of large scale power systems. In addition, an overview of the main
drivers and requirements for modernization of the traditional methods for online
applications are discussed. The second volume provides techniques for online security
assessment and corrective action studies. In addition, the impact of variable generation
on the security of power systems is considered in the second volume. The first volume
may be considered as a background builder while the second volume is intended for
the coverage of edge techniques and methods for online dynamic security studies.
This book is the result of works dedicated to specific applications of
metaheuristics in smart electrical grids. From electric transmission,
distribution networks to electric microgrids, the notion of intelligence refers
to the ability to propose acceptable solutions in an increasingly more
restrictive environment. Most often, it refers to decision-making assisting

robotic planetary explorers. The book is also big because we go into some depth.
The subtitle of this book is “A Modern Approach.” The intended meaning of this rather
empty phrase is that we have tried to synthesize what is now known into a common frame-
work, rather than trying to explain each subfield of AI in its own historical context. We
