Microengineering and Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have very few
watertight definitions regarding their subjects and technologies. Microengineering
can be described as the techniques, technologies, and practices involved in the
realization of structures and devices with dimensions on the order of micrometers.
MEMS often refer to mechanical devices with dimensions on the order of
micrometers fabricated using techniques originating in the integrated circuit (IC)
industry, with emphasis on silicon-based structures and integrated microelectronic
circuitry. However, the term is now used to refer to a much wider range of
microengineered devices and technologies.

The profiles are defined as follows: ARMv7-A The application profile for systems supporting the ARM and Thumb instruction sets, and requiring virtual address support in the memory management model. ARMv7-R The realtime profile for systems supporting the ARM and Thumb instruction sets, and requiring physical address only support in the memory management model ARMv7-M The microcontroller profile for systems supporting only the Thumb instruction set, and where overall size and deterministic operation for an implementation are more important than absolute performance. While profiles were formally introduced with the ARMv7 development, the A-profile and R-profile have implicitly existed in earlier versions, associated with the Virtual Memory System Architecture (VMSA) and Protected Memory System Architecture (PMSA) respectively.
