Wavelets have widely been used in many signal and image processing applications. In this paper, a new serial-parallel architecture for wavelet-based image compression is introduced. It is based on a 4-tap wavelet transform, which is realised using some FIFO memory modules implementing a pixel-level pipeline architecture to compress and decompress images. The real filter calculation over 4 · 4 window blocks is done using a tree of carry save adders to ensure the high speed processing required for many applications. The details of implementing both compressor and decompressor sub-systems are given. The primarily analysis reveals that the proposed architecture, implemented using current VLSI technologies, can process a video stream in real time.

American Gladiator,You are consulting for a game show in which n contestants are pitted against n gladiators in order to see which contestants are the best. The game show aims to rank the contestants in order of strength this is done via a series of 1-on-1 matches between contestants and gladiators. If the contestant is stronger than the gladiator, then the contestant wins the match otherwise, the gladiator wins the match. If the contestant and gladiator have equal strength, then they are “perfect equals” and a tie is declared. We assume that each contestant is the perfect equal of exactly one gladiator, and each gladiator is the perfect equal of exactly one contestant. However, as the gladiators sometimes change from one show to another, we do not know the ordering of strength among the gladiators.

The purpose of this lab is to introduce the concept of FSMs with a datapath, and to study the usage of more complex test benches. Also, we enforce a rudimentary design methodology by assuming that the students are part of a bigger project, and have no knowledge of VHDL-implementation of the datapath (made by a hypothetical other group) other than its predefined Entity Interface until they come to the lab. The rest of this document is structured as follows: Section 2 describes some prelimi- nary reading and exercises that should be done before the lab. EDB (Evan s Debugger) is a QT4 based binary mode debugger with the goal of having usability on par with OllyDbg. It uses a plugin architecture, so adding new features can be done with ease. The current release is for Linux, but future releases will target more platforms. Release focus: Major feature enhancements Changes: A new disassembly engine. A bug that could cause crashing was fixed. There is a new flags breakdown in the register view, an environment view plugin, and improved analysis (including a good speed increase). A bug in QT where disabled events could be triggered has been worked around.

Spartan 3 Digilent Demo:This demo drives the perphrials on the Spartan 3 board. This drives a simple pattern to the VGA port, connects the switches to the LEDs, buttons to each anode of the seven segment decoder. The seven segment decoder has a simple counter running on it, and when SW0 is in the up position the seven segment decoder will display scan codes from the PS2 port. This demo how ever does not drive the RS-232 port or the memory. This is a simple design done entirely VHDL not microblaze.
