Over many years, RF-MEMS have been a hot topic in research at the technology
and device level. In particular, various kinds of mechanical Si-MEMS resonators
and piezoelectric BAW (bulk acoustic wave) resonators have been developed. The
BAW technology has made its way to commercial products for passive RF filters,
in particular for duplexers in RF transceiver front ends for cellular communica-
tions. Beyond their use in filters, micromachined resonators can also be used in
conjunction with active devices in innovative circuits and architectures.

HIS IS THE THIRD —and most likely the last—book
in the series on information technology for
energy managers and web based energy infor-
mation and control systems. This book concentrates on
web based enterprise energy and building automation
systems, and serves as a capstone volume in this series.
The thrust here is that the highest level functions of a
building and facility automation system are provided
by a web based EIS/ECS system that provides energy
management, maintenance management, overall facility
operational management, and ties in with the enterprise
resource management system for the entire facility or
the group of facilities being managed. If there were ever
to be a fourth volume in this series, it would follow
the logical progression of the first three volumes, and
would probably be titled Web Based Enterprise Resource
Management Systems.

The continuous progress in modern power device technology is increasingly
supported by power-specific modeling methodologies and dedicated simulation
tools. These enable the detailed analysis of operational principles on the the device
and on the system level; in particular, they allow the designer to perform trade-
off studies by investigating the operation of competing design variants in a very
early stage of the development process. Furthermore, using predictive computer
simulation makes it possible to analyze the device and system behavior not only
under regularoperatingconditions, but also at the rim of the safe-operatingarea and
beyond of it, where destructive processes occur that limit the lifetime of a power
system.

Radio frequency identifi cation (RFID) technology is a wireless communication
technology that enables users to uniquely identify tagged objects or people.
RFID is rapidly becoming a cost-effective technology. This is in large part
due to the efforts of Wal-Mart and the Department of Defense (DoD) to
incorporate RFID technology into their supply chains. In 2003, with the aim
of enabling pallet-level tracking of inventory, Wal-Mart issued an RFID
mandate requiring its top suppliers to begin tagging pallets and cases, with
Electronic Product Code (EPC) labels. The DoD quickly followed suit and
issued the same mandate to its top 100 suppliers. This drive to incorporate
RFID technology into their supply chains is motivated by the increased ship-
ping, receiving and stocking effi ciency and the decreased costs of labor, storage,
and product loss that pallet-level visibility of inventory can offer.

LIKE SO MANY OTHERS , THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN BECAUSE WE COULDN ’ T FIND ONE LIKE IT . We
needed something to hand to all of those people who have come to us asking for “a good
book to read on RFID.” When we looked for candidates we found some great books, but
most were aimed at electrical engineers or top-level managers, with very little for those of
us who are in between. This book is for developers, system and software architects, and
project managers, as well as students and professionals in all of the industries impacted by
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) who want to understand how this technology
works. As the title suggests, this book is about RFID in general and not just the most
recent developments; however, because so much is going on in the area of RFID for the
supply chain and especially the Electronic Product Code (EPC), we have devoted consider-
able space to these topics. Regardless of the type of RFID work you may be doing, we
think you will find something useful here.

If one examines the current literature on GPS receiver design, most of it is quite a
bit above the level of the novice. It is taken for granted that the reader is already at a
fairly high level of understanding and proceeds from there. This text will be an
attempt to take the reader through the concepts and circuits needed to be able to
understand how a GPS receiver works from the antenna to the solution of user
position.

I can remember buying my first electronic calculator. I was teaching a graduate level statistics course and I
had to have a calculator with a square root function. Back in the late 1960s, that was a pretty high-end
requirement for a calculator. I managed to purchase one at the “educational discount price” of $149.95!
Now, I look down at my desk at an ATmega2560 that is half the size for less than a quarter of the cost and
think of all the possibilities built into that piece of hardware. I am amazed by what has happened to
everything from toasters to car engines. Who-da-thunk-it 40 years ago?

Building a robot and enabling it to sense its environment is a wonderful way to
take your Arduino knowledge to the next level. In writing this book, I have brought
together my love for invention and my experience with electronics, robotics and
microcontrollers. I hope you have as much pleasure building and enhancing your
robot as I did developing the techniques contained in this book.

Since its release, Arduino has become more than just a development platform; it has become a culture built around
the idea of open source and open hardware, and one that is reimagining computer science and education. Arduino has
opened hardware development by making the starting skills easy to obtain, but retaining the complexities of real-world
application. This combination makes Arduino a perfect environment for school students, seasoned developers, and
designers. This is the first Arduino book to hold the title of “Pro,” and demonstrates skills and concepts that are used by
developers in a more advanced setting. Going beyond projects, this book provides examples that demonstrate concepts
that can be easily integrated into many different projects and provide inspiration for future ones. The focus of this book
is as a transition from the intermediate to the professional.

This book is an outgrowth of a course developed at Stanford University over
the past five years. It is suitable as a self-contained textbook for second-level
undergraduates or for first-level graduate students in almost every field that
employs quantitative methods. As prerequisites, it is assumed that the student
may have had a first course in differential equations and a first course in linear
algebra or matrix analysis. These two subjects, however, are reviewed in
Chapters 2 and 3, insofar as they are required for later developments.
