With the rapid expansion of wireless consumer products, there has been a con-
siderable increase in the need for radio-frequency (RF) planning, link plan-
ning, and propagation modeling.A network designer with no RF background
may find himself/herself designing a wireless network. A wide array of RF
planning software packages can provide some support, but there is no substi-
tute for a fundamental understanding of the propagation process and the lim-
itations of the models employed. Blind use of computer-aided design (CAD)
programs with no understanding of the physical fundamentals underlying the
process can be a recipe for disaster. Having witnessed the results of this
approach, I hope to spare others this frustration.

LTE-Advanced becomes a truly global standard for 4G cellular communications.
Relay, as one of the key technologies of LTE-Advanced, can significantly extend
the coverage, and improve the system throughput. LTE-A standards and tech-
nologies were described in several recent books where the limited pages for relay
feature prevent the detailed explanations of the technology. In this book, we tried
to provide an in-depth description of LTE-A relay development. More specifically,
significant portions are spent on relay channel modeling and potential technologies
during the study item phase of the development, although some of those tech-
nologies, such as Type 2 cooperative relay, multi-hop relay, relay with backhaul of
carrier aggregation, were not standardized in Release 10 LTE.

MIMO-OFDM is a key technology for next-generation cellular communications (3GPP-LTE,
Mobile WiMAX, IMT-Advanced) as well as wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11n),
wireless PAN (MB-OFDM), and broadcasting (DAB, DVB, DMB). This book provides a
comprehensive introduction to the basic theory and practice of wireless channel modeling,
OFDM, and MIMO, with MATLAB ? programs to simulate the underlying techniques on
MIMO-OFDMsystems.Thisbookisprimarilydesignedforengineersandresearcherswhoare

In general there are three different techniques for performance evaluation of
systems and networks: mathematical analysis, measurements, and computer
simulation. All these techniques have their strength and weaknesses. In the
literature there are plenty of discussions about when to use which technique,
how to apply it, and which pitfalls are related to which evaluation technique.

The insinuation of telecommunications into the daily fabric of our lives has been
arguably the most important and surprising development of the last 25 years. Before
this revolution, telephone service and its place in our lives had been largely stable
for more than a generation. The growth was, so to speak, lateral, as the global reach
of telecommunications extended and more people got telephone service. The
distinction between oversea and domestic calls blurred with the advances in
switching and transmission, undersea cable, and communication satellites. Traffic
on the network remained overwhelmingly voice, largely in analog format with
facsimile (Fax) beginning to make inroads.

The family of recent wireless standards included the optional employment of MIMO tyechniques.
This was motivated by the observation according to the classic Shannon-Hartley law the achiev-
able channel capacity increases logarithmically with the transmit power. By contrast, the MIMO
capacity increases linearly with the number of transmit antennas, provided that the number of
receive antennas is equal to the number of transmit antennas.

modeling and simulation of nonlinear systems provide communication system designers
with a tool to predict and verify overall system performance under nonlinearity and
complex communication signals. Traditionally, RF system designers use deterministic
signals (discrete tones), which can be implemented in circuit simulators, to predict the
performance of their nonlinear circuits/systems. However, RF system designers are usually
faced with the problem of predicting system performance when the input to the system
is real-world communication signals which have a random nature.

Since the first edition of the book was published, the field of modeling and simulation of
communication systems has grown and matured in many ways, and the use of simulation as a
day-to-day tool is now even more common practice. Many new modeling and simulation
approaches have been developed in the recent years, many more commercial simulation
packages are available, and the evolution of powerful general mathematical applications
packages has provided still more options for computer-aided design and analysis. With the
current interest in digital mobile communications, a primary area of application of modeling
and simulation is now to wireless systems of a different flavor than the traditional ones.

Part I provides a compact survey on classical stochastic geometry models. The basic models defined
in this part will be used and extended throughout the whole monograph, and in particular to SINR based
models. Note however that these classical stochastic models can be used in a variety of contexts which
go far beyond the modeling of wireless networks. Chapter 1 reviews the definition and basic properties of
Poisson point processes in Euclidean space. We review key operations on Poisson point processes (thinning,
superposition, displacement) as well as key formulas like Campbell’s formula. Chapter 2 is focused on
properties of the spatial shot-noise process: its continuity properties, its Laplace transform, its moments
etc. Both additive and max shot-noise processes are studied. Chapter 3 bears on coverage processes,
and in particular on the Boolean model. Its basic coverage characteristics are reviewed. We also give a
brief account of its percolation properties. Chapter 4 studies random tessellations; the main focus is on
Poisson–Voronoi tessellations and cells. We also discuss various random objects associated with bivariate
point processes such as the set of points of the first point process that fall in a Voronoi cell w.r.t. the second
point process.

A mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) is formed by multiple moving nodes
equipped with wireless transceivers. The mobile nodes communicate with
each other through multi-hop wireless links, where every node can transmit
and receive information. Mobile ad-hoc networks have become increasingly
important in areas where deployment of communications infrastructure is
difficult.
