The continued reduction of integrated circuit feature sizes and
commensurate improvements in device performance are fueling the progress
to higher functionality and new application areas. For example, over the last
15 years, the performance of microprocessors has increased 1000 times.
Analog circuit performance has also improved, albeit at a slower pace. For

The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) allows an end user to send and
receive data in packet transfer mode within a public land mobile network
(PLMN) without using a permanent connection between the mobile station
(MS) and the external network during data transfer. This way, GPRS opti-
mizes the use of network and radio resources (RRs) since, unlike circuit-
switched mode, no connection between the MS and the external network is
established when there is no data flow in progress. Thus, this RR optimiza-
tion makes it possible for the operator to offer more attractive fees.

The ever-increasing demand for private and sensitive data transmission over wireless net-
works has made security a crucial concern in the current and future large-scale, dynamic,
and heterogeneous wireless communication systems. To address this challenge, computer
scientists and engineers have tried hard to continuously come up with improved crypto-
graphic algorithms. But typically we do not need to wait too long to find an efficient way
to crack these algorithms. With the rapid progress of computational devices, the current
cryptographic methods are already becoming more unreliable. In recent years, wireless re-
searchers have sought a new security paradigm termed physical layer security. Unlike the
traditional cryptographic approach which ignores the effect of the wireless medium, physi-
cal layer security exploits the important characteristics of wireless channel, such as fading,
interference, and noise, for improving the communication security against eavesdropping
attacks. This new security paradigm is expected to complement and significantly increase
the overall communication security of future wireless networks.

Recent advances in wireless communication technologies have had a transforma-
tive impact on society and have directly contributed to several economic and social
aspects of daily life. Increasingly, the untethered exchange of information between
devices is becoming a prime requirement for further progress, which is placing an
ever greater demand on wireless bandwidth. The ultra wideband (UWB) system
marks a major milestone in this progress. Since 2002, when the FCC allowed the
unlicensed use of low-power, UWB radio signals in the 3.1–10.6GHz frequency
band, there has been significant synergistic advance in this technology at the cir-
cuits, architectural and communication systems levels. This technology allows for
devices to communicate wirelessly, while coexisting with other users by ensuring
that its power density is sufficiently low so that it is perceived as noise to other
users.

Digital radios have undergone an astonishing evolution in the last century. Born as a set of simple and
power-hungry electrical and electromechanical devices for low data rate transmission of telegraph data
in the Marconi age, they have transformed, thanks to substantial advances in electronic technology,
into a set of small, reliable and sophisticated integrated devices supporting broadband multimedia
communications. This, however, would not have been possible unless significant progress had been
made in recent decades in the field of signal processing algorithms for baseband and passband signals.
In fact, the core of any modern digital radio consists of a set of algorithms running over programmable
electronic hardware. This book stems from the research and teaching activities of its co-authors in
the field of algorithmic techniques for wireless communications. A huge body of technical literature
has accumulated in the last four decades in this area, and an extensive coverage of all its important
aspects in a single textbook is impossible. For this reason, we have selected a few important topics
and, for ease of reading, organized them into two parts.
