District energy (DE) systems use central heating and/or cooling facilities to provide heating and/or cooling services for communities. The advantages of district energy over conventional heating and cooling include improved efficiency, reliability and safety, reduced environmental impact, and for many situations better economics. DE systems can be particularly beneficial when integrated with cogeneration plants for electricity and heat, i.e., with combined heat and power (CHP) plants. One of the main impediments to increased use of cogeneration-based district energy is a lack of understanding of the behavior of integrated forms of such systems. This book is aimed at providing information on district energy and cogeneration tech- nologies, as well as systems that combine them.

Modern power systems involve large amount of investment. An electric power system comprises of generation, transmission, and distribution of electric energy. Growth of power systems has led to very complex networks extended across large areas. In such situations, the proper functioning of a modern power system is heavily dependent upon the healthy operation of the transmission lines within it. Transmission lines are used to transmit a huge amount of power over a long distance. Despite the development of a now vast body of knowledge known as modern control theory, and despite some spectacular applications of this theory to practical situations, it is quite clear that much of the theory has yet to find application, and many practical control problems have yet to find a theory which will successfully deal with them. No book of course can remedy the situation at this time. But the aim of this book is to construct one of many bridges that are still required for the student and practicing control engineer between the familiar classical control results and those of modern control theory.
