  • Ultra Wideband Signals and Systems 1st

    In this book we focus on the basic signal processing that underlies current and future ultra wideband systems. By looking at signal processing in this way we hope this text will be useful even as UWB applications mature and change or regulations regarding ultra wideband systems are modified. The current UWB field is extremely dynamic, with new techniques and ideas being presented at every communications and signal-processing conference. The basic signal-processing techniques presented in this text though will not change for some time to come. Thus, we have taken a somewhat theoretical approach, which we believe is longer lasting and more useful to the reader in the long term than an up-to-the-minute summary that is out of date as soon as it is published.

  • Wireless Optical Communication Systems

    The use of optical free-space emissions to provide indoor wireless commu- nications has been studied extensively since the pioneering work of Gfeller and Bapst in 1979 [1]. These studies have been invariably interdisciplinary in- volving such far flung areas such as optics design? indoor propagation studies? electronics design? communications systems design among others. The focus of this text is on the design of communications systems for indoor wireless optical channels. Signalling techniques developed for wired fibre optic net- works are seldom efficient since they do not consider the bandwidth restricted nature of the wireless optical channel.

    This book is concerned with integrated circuits and systems for wireless and mobile communications. Circuit techniques and implementation of reconfigurable low-voltage and low-power single-chip CMOS transceivers for multiband and multi- mode universal wireless communications are the focus of the book. Applications encompass both long-range mobile cellular communications (GSM and UMTS) and short-range wireless LANs (IEEE802.11 and Bluetooth). Recent advances in research into transceiver architecture, RF frontend, analogue baseband, RF CAD and automatic testing are reported.

  • ESD-Phenomena-and-the-Reliability

    As we enter the next millennium, there are clear technological patterns. First, the electronic industry continues to scale microelectronic structures to achieve faster devices, new devices, or more per unit area. Secondly, electrostatic charge, electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical overstress (EOS) and electromagnetic emissions (EMI) continue to be a threat to these scaled structures. This dichotomy presents a dilemma for the scaling of semiconductor technologies and a future threat to new technologies. Technological advancements, material changes, design techniques, and simulation can fend off this growing concern – but to maintain this ever-threatening challenge, one must continue to establish research and education in this issue.

    Microengineering and Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have very few watertight definitions regarding their subjects and technologies. Microengineering can be described as the techniques, technologies, and practices involved in the realization of structures and devices with dimensions on the order of micrometers. MEMS often refer to mechanical devices with dimensions on the order of micrometers fabricated using techniques originating in the integrated circuit (IC) industry, with emphasis on silicon-based structures and integrated microelectronic circuitry. However, the term is now used to refer to a much wider range of microengineered devices and technologies.
