I often need a simple function generator. Just to generate a certain frequency. After all the years I ve worked with electronics, I still haven t got me one. Even though I need it now and then, I just couldn t seem to justify the cost of one.
So, standard solution - build one yourself.
I designed a simple sinewave generator based on a Analog Devices AD9832 chip. It will generate a sinewave from 0.005 to 12 MHz in 0.005 Hz steps.
That s pretty good, and definitely good enough for me ! But while waiting for the AD9832 chip to arrive, I came up with a very simple version of the DDS synth, using just the 2313 and a resistor network.

To review what a metaball is, and how to render them and to describe a
new optimization I ve made for rendering metaballs. For complex scenes,
it can render hundreds of times faster, though I m certain others have
discovered this trick as well. It does very slightly change the
characteristic shape of the blobs, but there is no loss in image quality
whatsoever. (I actually developed all this about two years ago, but just
now felt like writing it all down, and had the time!)

Java has become a confusing world. Five years ago, there were few decisions to make once
you started programming in Java—you used AWT for graphical user interfaces, sockets for
network programming, and hacked together everything else you needed. Since then, though,
the APIs available for the Java language have grown, and grown. . . and grown. Now you can
dabble in Swing, servlets, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB), JavaMail, and more. Additionally,
there are now packages of APIs, like the Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) and Java 2 Enterprise
Edition (J2EE). While these packages seem to be nicely wrapped bundles of useful APIs, they
don t help the average developer figure out how to piece together the APIs contained in these
packages. though it s simple to find documentation on the individual APIs, getting the "big
picture" is difficult, at best. One of the most interesting, but difficult, aspects of Java today is
building Java enterprise applications using the J2EE package.

Watermarking schemes evaluation
Abstract鈥擠igital watermarking has been presented as a solution to copy protection of multimedia objects and dozens of schemes and algorithms have been proposed. Two main problems seriously darken the future of this technology though.
Firstly, the large number of attacks and weaknesses which appear as fast as new algorithms are proposed, emphasizes the limits of this technology and in particu-lar the fact that it may not match users expectations.
Secondly, the requirements, tools and methodologies to assess the current technologies are almost non-existent. The lack of benchmarking of current algorithms is bla-tant. This confuses rights holders as well as software and hardware manufacturers and prevents them from using the solution appropriate to their needs. Indeed basing long-lived protection schemes on badly tested watermarking technology does not make sense.

C++ is a programming language. It is a programming language of many
different dialects, just like each language that is spoken has many dialects. In C though, they are not because the "speakers" live in the North, South, or grew up in some other place, it is because there are so many compilers. There are about four major ones: Borland C++, Microsoft Visual C++, Watcom C/386, and DJGPP. You can download DJGPP http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/ or you may already have another compiler.
Each of these compilers is a little different. The library functions of one will have all of the standard C++ functions, but they will also have other functions or, continuing the analogy, words. At times, this can lead to confusion, as certain programs will only run under certain compilers, though I do not believe this to be the case with the programs in these tutorials.
