Uniform random number generators by Agner Fog, 2001 - 2007 randomc.zip contains a C++ class library of uniform random number generators of good quality. The random number generators found in standard libraries are often of a poor quality, insufficient for large Monte Carlo calculations. This C++ implementation provides random number generators of a much better quality: Better randomness, higher resolution, and longer cycle lengths. The same random number generators are available as libraries coded in assembly language for higher speed. These libraries can be linked into projects coded in other programming languages under Windows, Linux, BSD, ETC. The library files are available in the archive asmlib.zip. Non-uniform random number generators are provided in stocc.zip.

Intro/: Directory containing introductory examples. HelloWorld.c A simple program that draws a box and writes "Hello World" in HelloWorld.f it. data The data file for the introductory progressive example. As science advances, novel experiments are becoming more and more complex, requiring a zoo of control devices and electronics executing complicated sequences of steps. Device availability and monetary constrains usually lead to a highly heterogeneous setup with components from several different manufacturers using many different protocols and interfacing mechanisms. This often results in control software being puzzled together to use and provide a multitude of interfacing and control functionality, each using their own calling conventions, data structures, ETC. To make matters worse, usually a group of relatively independent programmers is trying to write and maintain the code base. Often this causes extensive duplication of effort as program segments are hard to reuse, since unpredictable changes to the segments by the original authors might compromise other code using these segments.

In this demo, I use the EM algorithm with a Rauch-Tung-Striebel smoother and an M step, which I ve recently derived, to train a two-layer perceptron, so as to classify medical data (kindly provided by Steve Roberts and Will Penny from EE, Imperial College). The data and simulations are described in: Nando de Freitas, Mahesan Niranjan and Andrew Gee Nonlinear State Space Estimation with Neural Networks and the EM algorithm After downloading the file, type "tar -xf EMdemo.tar" to uncompress it. This creates the directory EMdemo containing the required m files. Go to this directory, load matlab5 and type "EMtremor". The figures will then show you the simulation results, including ROC curves, likelihood plots, decision boundaries with error bars, ETC. WARNING: Do make sure that you monitor the log-likelihood and check that it is increasing. Due to numerical errors, it might show glitches for some data sets.
