The world population is continuously growing and reached a significant EVOLUTION of
the society, where the number of people living in cities surpassed the number of people
in rural areas.

In recent years, cellular voice networks have transformed into powerful packet-switched
access networks for both voice communication and Internet access. Evolving Universal
Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) networks and first Long Term EVOLUTION
(LTE) installations now deliver bandwidths of several megabits per second to individual
users, and mobile access to the Internet from handheld devices and notebooks is no
longer perceived as slower than a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or cable connection.
Bandwidth and capacity demands, however, keep rising because of the increasing number
of people using the networks and because of bandwidth-intensive applications such as
video streaming. Thus, network manufacturers and network operators need to find ways
to continuously increase the capacity and performance of their cellular networks while
reducing the cost.
During the past years, there has been a quickly rising interest in radio access tech-
nologies for providing mobile as well as nomadic and fixed services for voice,
video, and data. The difference in design, implementation, and use between
telecom and datacom technologies is also getting more blurred. One example is
cellular technologies from the telecom world being used for broadband data and
wireless LAN from the datacom world being used for voice over IP.
4G Americas is an industry trade organization composed of leading
telecommunications service providers and manufacturers. The
organization's mission is to advocate for and foster the
advancement and full capabilities of the LTE mobile broadband
technology and its EVOLUTION beyond to 5G, throughout the
ecosystem's networks, services, applications and wirelessly
connected devices in the Americas. 4G Americas, the voice of 5G for
the Americas, is invested in leading 5G development for the
Americas and maintaining the current global innovation lead in
North America with LTE technology.
EVOLUTIONary Computation (EC) deals with problem solving, optimization, and
machine learning techniques inspired by principles of natural EVOLUTION and ge-
netics. Just from this basic definition, it is clear that one of the main features of
the research community involved in the study of its theory and in its applications
is multidisciplinarity. For this reason, EC has been able to draw the attention of
an ever-increasing number of researchers and practitioners in several fields.
The design and manufacturing of wireless radio frequency (RF) transceivers has developed rapidly in recent ten
yeas due to rapid development of RF integrated circuits and the EVOLUTION of high-speed digital signal
processors (DSP). Such high speed signal processors, in conjunction with the development of high resolution
analog to digital converters and digital to analog converters, has made it possible for RF designers to digitize
higher intermediate frequencies, thus reducing the RF section and enhancing the overall performance of the RF
section.
Following chapter introduces the mobile communication, gives a short history of wireless
communication EVOLUTION, and highlights some application scenarios predestined for the
use of mobile devices. Cellular and wireless based systems related to different generations
of mobile communication, including GSM, IS-95, PHS, AMPS, D-AMPS, cdma2000 and
WCDMA are also described by this Chapter. Much attention in this chapter is given
to express the wireless based networks, such as Wi-Fi and WiBro/WiMax, and wireless
broadcasting systems, including DMB, DVB-H, and ISDB-T. We conclude the chapter
with the future vision of mobile communication EVOLUTION
The telecommunications industry is undoubtedly in a period of radical change with
the advent of mobile broadband radio access and the rapid convergence of Internet
and mobile services. Some of these changes have been enabled by a fundamental
shift in the underlying technologies; mobile networks are now increasingly based
on a pure Internet Protocol (IP) network architecture. Since the first edition of this
book was published in 2009, a multitude of connected devices from eBook readers
to smartphones and even Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technologies have all started
to benefit from mobile broadband. The sea change over the last few years is only the
beginning of a wave of new services that will fundamentally change our economy, our
society, and even our environment. The EVOLUTION towards mobile broadband is one of
the core underlying parts of this rEVOLUTION and is the focus of this book.
The next-generation wireless broadband technology is changing the way
we work, live, learn, and communicate through effective use of state-
of-the-art mobile broadband technology. The packet-data-based revolu-
tion started around 2000 with the introduction of 1x Evolved Data Only
(1xEV-DO) and 1x Evolved Data Voice (1xEV-DV) in 3GPP2 and High
Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) in 3GPP. The wireless broad-
band fourth-generation technology (4G) is an EVOLUTION of the packet-
based 3G system and provides a comprehensive EVOLUTION of the
Universal Mobile Telecommunications System specifications so as to
remain competitive with other broadband systems such as 802.16e
(WiMAX)
