This book is an entry-level text on the technology of telecommunications. It has been
crafted with the newcomer in mind. The eighteen chapters of text have been prepared
for high-school graduates who understand algebra, logarithms, and basic Electrical prin-
ciples such as Ohm’s law. However, many users require support in these areas so Appen-
dices A and B review the essentials of electricity and mathematics through logarithms.

Telecommunications is today widely understood to mean the Electrical means of
communicating over a distance. The first form of telecommunications was that of
the Telegraph, which was invented quite independently in 1837 by two scientists,
Wheatstone and Morse. Telegraphy was on a point-to-point unidirectional basis and
relied on trained operators to interpret between the spoken or written word and the
special signals sent over the telegraph wire. However, the use of telegraphy did
greatly enhance the operations of railways and, of course, the dissemination of news
and personal messages between towns.

Digital radios have undergone an astonishing evolution in the last century. Born as a set of simple and
power-hungry Electrical and electromechanical devices for low data rate transmission of telegraph data
in the Marconi age, they have transformed, thanks to substantial advances in electronic technology,
into a set of small, reliable and sophisticated integrated devices supporting broadband multimedia
communications. This, however, would not have been possible unless significant progress had been
made in recent decades in the field of signal processing algorithms for baseband and passband signals.
In fact, the core of any modern digital radio consists of a set of algorithms running over programmable
electronic hardware. This book stems from the research and teaching activities of its co-authors in
the field of algorithmic techniques for wireless communications. A huge body of technical literature
has accumulated in the last four decades in this area, and an extensive coverage of all its important
aspects in a single textbook is impossible. For this reason, we have selected a few important topics
and, for ease of reading, organized them into two parts.

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) phenomena have been known to mankind since the Greek
Empire when Thales of Miletus, one of the Seven Sages of Greece, noticed the attraction of
strands of hay to amber, leading to the coining of the word ‘‘electron.’’ In the 17th century,
Gilbert and Cabeo addressed the attractive and repulsive nature of electricity. In the 18th
century, a rapid increase of interest occurred for scientists in the understanding of Electrical
physics—Gray, du Fay, Nollet, Musschenbroeck, Franklin, Watson, Aepinus, Canton,

Failure analysis is invaluable in the learning process of electrostatic discharge (ESD) and
Electrical overstress (EOS) protection design and development [1–8]. In the failure analysis
of EOS, ESD, and latchup events, there are a number of unique failure analysis processes
andinformationthatcanprovidesignificantunderstandingandillumination[4].Today,thereis
still no design methodology or computer-aided design (CAD) tool which will predict EOS,
ESDprotectionlevels,andlatchupinasemiconductorchip;thisisoneofthesignificantreasons
why failure analysis is critical to the ESD design discipline.

and the guiding of Electrical discharge (e.g., lightning) was of interest to Benjamin Franklin
in the 1700s, with the invention of the lightning rod. The lightning rod was mankind’s first
effort to guide the Electrical discharge current of a lightning strike in a direction that would
not harm structures.

As we enter the next millennium, there are clear technological patterns. First, the
electronic industry continues to scale microelectronic structures to achieve faster
devices, new devices, or more per unit area. Secondly, electrostatic charge, electrostatic
discharge (ESD), Electrical overstress (EOS) and electromagnetic emissions (EMI)
continue to be a threat to these scaled structures. This dichotomy presents a dilemma
for the scaling of semiconductor technologies and a future threat to new technologies.
Technological advancements, material changes, design techniques, and simulation can
fend off this growing concern – but to maintain this ever-threatening challenge, one must
continue to establish research and education in this issue.

The large-scale deployment of the smart grid (SG) paradigm could play a strategic role in
supporting the evolution of conventional Electrical grids toward active, flexible and self-
healing web energy networks composed of distributed and cooperative energy resources.
From a conceptual point of view, the SG is the convergence of information and
operational technologies applied to the electric grid, providing sustainable options to
customers and improved security. Advances in research on SGs could increase the
efficiency of modern Electrical power systems by: (i) supporting the massive penetration
of small-scale distributed and dispersed generators; (ii) facilitating the integration of
pervasive synchronized metering systems; (iii) improving the interaction and cooperation
between the network components; and (iv) allowing the wider deployment of self-healing
and proactive control/protection paradigms.

Electricity has been chosen as the most convenient and useful form of energy, due
to its ease of transportation over large distances and easy conversion to other
energy forms. The biggest inconvenience with electricity is that it cannot be stored
and must be utilized at the moment of generation. The storage of a large amount of
Electrical energy is usually connected with its conversion to other types of energy,
which significantly reduces the efficiency of such processes. The aim of the power
system, often treated as the biggest and the most complex machine ever built, is to
deliver uninterruptible electric energy of demanded quality parameters to
consumers.

With the rapid development of electric vehicles (EVs) as well as the promotion and
application of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies, EVs charging loads, as flexible
loads, have the potential to participate in the grid services, including peak shaving
and valley filling, frequency regulation (FR), emergency power, energy market
participation, and so on. Therefore, great attention has been paid to EVs and V2G.
Focusing on the interactions between EVs and power system, this book aims to
bring readers with basic knowledge of Electrical engineering promptly to the
frontier of the EVs’ influence on power system and environment. This book may
serve as a reference for scientists, Electrical engineers, and postgraduate students
majoring in Electrical engineering or other related fields.
