A large body of computer-aided techniques has been developed in recent years to assist
in the process of modeling, analyzing, and designing communication systems . These
computer-aided techniques fall into two categories: formula-based approaches, where the
computer is used to evaluate complex formulas, and simulation-based approaches, where the
computer is used to simulate the waveforms or signals that flow through the system. The
second approach, which involves “waveform”-level simulation (and often incorporates
analytical techniques), is the Subject of this book.
Since performance evaluation and trade off studies are the central issues in the analysis
and design of communication systems, we will focus on the use of simulation for evaluating
the performance of analog and digital communication systems with the emphasis on digitalcommunication systems.

obot control, a Subject aimed at making robots behave as desired, has been
extensively developed for more than two decades. Among many books being
published on this Subject, a common feature is to treat a robot as a single
system that is to be controlled by a variety of control algorithms depending on
different scenarios and control objectives. However, when a robot becomes more
complex and its degrees of freedom of motion increase substantially, the needed
control computation can easily go beyond the scope a modern computer can
handle within a pre-specified sampling period. A solution is to base the control
on subsystem dynamics.
This book provides technical information about all aspects of 3GPP LTE. The areas
covered range from basic concepts to research-grade material, including future
directions. The book captures the current state of 3GPP LTE technology and serves
as a source of comprehensive reference material on this Subject. It has a total of
12 chapters authored by 50 experts from around the world. The targeted audi-
ence includes professionals who are designers or planners for 3GPP LTE systems,
researchers (faculty members and graduate students), and those who would like to
learn about this field.
This is the second edition of a textbook that is intended for a senior or graduate-level
course in an electrical engineering (EE) curriculum on the Subject of the analysis of
multiconductor transmission lines (MTLs). It will also serve as a useful reference
for industry professionals.
The very title of this book is borrowed from the information theory vocabulary,
and, quite naturally, it is an outline of this theory that will serve as an introduction.
The Subject of information theory is the scientific study of communications. To this
end it defines a quantitative measurement of the communicated content, i.e. informa-
tion, and deals with two operations essential for communication techniques: source
coding and channel encoding.
Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems have recently been the
Subject of intensive consideration in modem wireless communications as they
offer the potential of providing high capacity, thus unleashing a wide range of
applications in the wireless domain. The main feature of MIMO systems is the
use of space-time processing and Space-Time Codes (STCs). Among a variety
of STCs, orthogonal Space-Time Block Codes (STBCs) have a much simpler
decoding method, compared to other STCs
Cooperation has been the Subject of intensive study in the social and biological
sciences, as well as in mathematics and artificial intelligence. The fundamental
finding is that even egoists can sustain cooperation provided the structure of
their environment allows for repeated interactions (Axelrod 1984).
While teaching classes on digital transmission and mobile communications for
undergraduate and graduate students, I was wondering if it would be possible to
write a book capable of giving them some insight about the practical meaning of the
concepts, beyond the mathematics; the same insight that experience and repetitive
contact with the Subject are capable to construct; the insight that is capable of build-
ing the bridge between the theory and how the theory manifests itself in practice.
When the authors of this book asked me to write the foreword of
their work on the digital enterprise, I immediately thought that it was
one more document on a fashionable topic in the technology and the
business world of the 21st Century often addressed by consulting
firms, some of which have aspired to become experts on the Subject.
However, a more careful observation reveals that an issue more
important than the sole Subject of the digital enterprise is: “Is your
company fully operational?”, because this is the real topic.
