The PCF8578 is a low power CMOS1 LCD row and column driver, designed to drive dotmatrix graphic displays at multiplex rates of 1:8, 1:16, 1:24 or 1:32. The device has40 outputs, of which 24 are programmable and configurable for the following ratios ofrows/columns: 32¤8, 24¤16, 16¤24 or 8¤32. The PCF8578 can function as a stand-alone LCDcontroller and driver for use in small systems. For larger systems it can be used inconjunction with up to 32 PCF8579s for which it has been optimized. Together these twodevices form a general purpose LCD dot matrix driver chip set, capable of driving displaysof up to 40960 dots. The PCF8578 is compatible with most microcontrollers andcommunicates via a two-line bidirectional bus (I2C-bus). Communication overhead isminimized by a display RAM with auto-incremented addressing and display bankswitching.
There are many manufacturers of dot matrix LCD modules. However, most of these displaysare similar. They all have on-board controllers and drivers capable of displaying alpha numericsand a wide variety of other symbols (including Japanese "Katakana" characters). The internaloperation of LCD controller devices is determined by signals sent from a central processing unit(in this case, a CoolRunner-II CPLD).

I wrote this code early this year using ColdFire MCF5213 in codewarrior IDE. The LCD is STN B/W 320x240 dot matrix LCD. The code include 3 different fonts, and basic LCD driver. All original!

LED 線陣顯示裝置, 分為 LED 線性旋轉(zhuǎn)顯示主機和圖文錄入器兩部分。主機用直流電機帶動由紅綠 LED 組成的線陣旋轉(zhuǎn), 同時線陣按照時序依次切換顯示狀態(tài), 在固定區(qū)域利用視覺暫留效果形成 16×16 點陣, 用以顯示圖文;圖文錄入器用 HMI 觸控屏作為人機交互界面, 實現(xiàn)圖文錄入和回放功能。主機與圖文錄入器通過無線通信方式進(jìn)行信息交互,可由圖文錄入器控制主機切換不同工作任務(wù), 以及改變線陣顯示內(nèi)容。The LED linear array display device is divided into two parts:the one is the main unit used to display content,and the other one is used to input the contents.The main unit is driven by a DC motor to rotate the linear array composed by red and green light emitting diodes.At the same time,the 16×16 dot matrix that switching the display state according to the time sequence on the main unit displays pictures and texts in the fixed area,by using the visual temporary effect.The HMI touch screen is used as human machine interface to realize the function that input and playback pictures and texts.The two parts of the device communicate with each other through wireless communication.The image and text input controller can control the main unit to switch different tasks and change the content of linear array displayed.
