This book is written for engineers involved in the operation, control, and
planning of electric power systems. In addition, the book provides information and
tools for researchers working in the fields of power system security and stability. The
book consists of two volumes. The first volume provides traditional techniques for the
stability analysis of large scale power systems. In addition, an overview of the main
drivers and requirements for modernization of the traditional methods for online
applications are discussed. The second volume provides techniques for online security
assessment and corrective action studies. In addition, the impact of variable generation
on the security of power systems is considered in the second volume. The first volume
may be considered as a background builder while the second volume is intended for
the coverage of edge techniques and methods for online dynamic security studies.

The solid high-polymer-film-type fuel cell (PEM-FC) system is used as the power
supply equipment for transportation and replaces an internal combustion engine. A
reduction of the environmental load is expected through the cogeneration system’s
(CGS) use of the PEM-FC system as a distributed power supply to individual
houses, apartments, and so forth [1–3]. The growing use of distributed power
systems, such as fuel cells, the reduction of power-transmission losses, and an
increase of waste heat recovery are expected. Therefore, the reduction of carbon-
dioxide emission is also expected as compared to conventional energy supply
methods using commercial electric power.

For many years prior to the 1970s, engineers designed and built switch mode
power supplies (SMPSs) using methods based largely on intuitive and exper-
imentally derived techniques. In general, these power supplies were able to
achieve their primary goal of high-efficiency power conversion; unfortu-
nately, due to the lack of adequate theoretical analysis techniques, many of
these power supplies only marginally met their desired performance require-
ments. In many cases, they were considered to be unreliable.

This chapter surveys the high temperature and oxygen partial pressure
behavior of complex oxide heterostructures as determined by in situ synchrotron
X-ray methods. We consider both growth and post-growth behavior, emphasizing
the observation of structural and interfacial defects relevant to the size-dependent
properties seen in these systems.

This reference design describes the design of a 3-phase AC induction
vector control drive with position encoder coupled to the motor shaft. It
is based on Motorola’s DSP56F805 dedicated motor control device.
AC induction motors, which contain a cage, are very popular in variable
speed drives. They are simple, rugged, inexpensive and available at all
power ratings. Progress in the field of power electronics and
microelectronics enables the application of induction motors for
high-performance drives, where traditionally only DC motors were
applied. Thanks to sophisticated control methods, AC induction drives
offer the same control capabilities as high performance four-quadrant
DC drives.

This book is an outgrowth of a course developed at Stanford University over
the past five years. It is suitable as a self-contained textbook for second-level
undergraduates or for first-level graduate students in almost every field that
employs quantitative methods. As prerequisites, it is assumed that the student
may have had a first course in differential equations and a first course in linear
algebra or matrix analysis. These two subjects, however, are reviewed in
Chapters 2 and 3, insofar as they are required for later developments.

The basic topic of this book is solving problems from system and control theory using
convex optimization. We show that a wide variety of problems arising in system
and control theory can be reduced to a handful of standard convex and quasiconvex
optimization problems that involve matrix inequalities. For a few special cases there
are “analytic solutions” to these problems, but our main point is that they can be
solved numerically in all cases. These standard problems can be solved in polynomial-
time (by, e.g., the ellipsoid algorithm of Shor, Nemirovskii, and Yudin), and so are
tractable, at least in a theoretical sense. Recently developed interior-point methods
for these standard problems have been found to be extremely efficient in practice.
Therefore, we consider the original problems from system and control theory as solved.

The main aim of this book is to present a unified, systematic description of
basic and advanced problems, methods and algorithms of the modern con-
trol theory considered as a foundation for the design of computer control
and management systems. The scope of the book differs considerably from
the topics of classical traditional control theory mainly oriented to the
needs of automatic control of technical devices and technological proc-
esses. Taking into account a variety of new applications, the book presents
a compact and uniform description containing traditional analysis and op-
timization problems for control systems as well as control problems with
non-probabilistic models of uncertainty, problems of learning, intelligent,
knowledge-based and operation systems – important for applications in the
