In case you haven’t noticed, multimedia communication over IP and wireless net-
works is exploding. Applications such as BitTorrent, used primarily for video
downloads, now take up the lion’s share of all traffic on the Internet. Music file
sharing, once on the legal cutting edge of massive copyright infringement on col-
lege campuses around the world, has moved into the mainstream with signifi-
cant legal downloads of music and video to devices such as the iPod and nu-
merous other portable media players.
Two of the major developments reshaping the telecommunications landscape are
mobile wireless connectivity and the migration of voice telephone services to IP
technology. Those two ideas come together in networks that carry voice services
over a wireless LAN (VoWLAN). The purpose of this text is to provide network
professionals with the technical background and practical guidance needed to
deploy these networks successfully.

I walked into a big networking company to head their small
Power over Ethernet (PoE) applications team. Surprisingly,
I hardly knew anything about PoE prior to that day, having been a
switching-power conversion engineer almost all my life. But it
seemed a great opportunity to widen my horizons. As you can see,
one notable outcome of that seemingly illogical career choice five
years ago is the book you hold in your hands today. I hope this small
body of work goes on to prove worthy of your expectations and also
of all the effort that went into it. Because, behind the scenes, there is a

Abstract: The MAX9930–MAX9933 family of RF controllers and detector can be used in a wide variety of applications. Anideal application is cable television (CATV) over fiber, where either a RF controller or a RF detector controls the gain of atransimpedance amplifier (TIA). This application note shows how the MAX9930 (RF controller) can be used as either theRF controller or detector.
Control systems are becoming increasingly dependent on digital processing and so require sensors able to provide direct digital inputs. Sensors based on time measurement, having outputs based on a frequency or phase, have an advantage over conventional analogue sensors in that their outputs can be measured directly in digital systems by pulse counting.
Sensors for pressure, load, temperature, acceleration andmany other physical quantities often take the form of aWheatstone bridge. These sensors can be extremely linearand stable over time and temperature. However, mostthings in nature are only linear if you don’t bend them toomuch. In the case of a load cell, Hooke’s law states that thestrain in a material is proportional to the applied stress—as long as the stress is nowhere near the material’s yieldpoint (the “point of no return” where the material ispermanently deformed).
