The investigation of the propagation channel is becoming more and more IMPortant in mod- ern wireless communication. The demand for spectral efficiency motivates exploitation of all channels that can possibly be used for communications. Nowadays, a common trend for designing physical layer algorithms is to adapt the transceiving strategy, either by maximizing the diversity gains or by utilizing the coherence of the channels to improve the signal-to-noise power ratio.

The first edition of this book was published in 1992. Nine years later it had become clear that a second edition was required because of the rapidly changing nature of telecommunication. In 1992, the Internet was in existence but it was not the household word that it is in the year 2001. Cellular telephones were also in use but they had not yet achieved the popularity that they enjoy today. In the current edition, Chapter 1 has been revised to include a section on the Internet. Chapter 10 is new and it covers the facsimile machine; I had overlooked this IMPortant tele- communication device in the first edition. Chapter 11 is also new and it describes the pager, the cordless telephone and the cellular telephone system. These are examples of a growing trend in telecommunications to go ‘‘wireless’’.

Digital radios have undergone an astonishing evolution in the last century. Born as a set of simple and power-hungry electrical and electromechanical devices for low data rate transmission of telegraph data in the Marconi age, they have transformed, thanks to substantial advances in electronic technology, into a set of small, reliable and sophisticated integrated devices supporting broadband multimedia communications. This, however, would not have been possible unless significant progress had been made in recent decades in the field of signal processing algorithms for baseband and passband signals. In fact, the core of any modern digital radio consists of a set of algorithms running over programmable electronic hardware.
