From helping to assess the value of new medical treatments to evaluating the
factors that affect our opinions and behaviors, analysts today are finding
myriad uses for categorical data methods. In this book we introduce these
methods and the theory behind them.
Statistical methods for categorical responses were late in gaining the level
of sophistication achieved early in the twentieth century by methods for
continuous responses. Despite influential work around 1900 by the British
statistician Karl Pearson, relatively little development of models for categorical
responses occurred until the 1960s. In this book we describe the early
fundamental work that still has importance today but place primary emphasis
on more recent modeling approaches. Before outlining

The Wifidog project is an open source captive portal solution. It was designed primarily for wireless community groups, but caters to various other business models as well. The software implements particle filtering and Rao Blackwellised particle filtering for conditionally Gaussian models. The RB algorithm can be interpreted as an efficient stochastic mixture of Kalman filters. The software also includes efficient state-of-the-art resampling routines. These are generic and suitable for any application. For details, please refer to Rao-Blackwellised Particle Filtering for Fault Diagnosis and On Sequential Simulation-Based Methods for Bayesian Filtering After downloading the file, type "tar -xf demo_rbpf_gauss.tar" to uncompress it. This creates the directory webalgorithm containing the required m files. Go to this directory, load matlab and run the demo.
A .zip file contains a series of scripts that were used in the MathWorks webinar "Using MATLAB to Develop Portfolio Optimization models." The scripts generate 3D efficient frontiers for a universe of 44 stocks with time as the third axis. Additional scripts perform various ex-ante and ex-post analyses. Results are generated with and without market adjustments in the data. A readme.txt. file in the .zip folder describes each script and how to use it
RS232.C was written to provide all of the basic functionality needed
to employ serial I/O in any application written with Borland C
language compilers. Some features are:
1. Ease of use. No assembly language or library files are used and a simple "#include" statement is all that is required to access all of the functions provided.
2. Both input and output are buffered and interrupt driven for efficiency.
3. Serial ports 1 - 4 are supported on PC, AT and PS/2 compatibles.Chained interrupts used on port 3 and 4 are allowed for so as not to interfere with devices such as a mouse or printer. Transmission speeds of 110 to 115200 baud are available.
4. Detection and utilization of hardware buffered UARTs (NS16550AF
etc.) found in some machines is automatic.
5. Interrupt driven hardware and XON/XOFF flow control is provided for.
6. All source code is included. RS232.C can be used with all memory
models.
The widespread use of embedded systems mandates the development of industrial software design methods, i.e. computer-aided design and engineering of embedded applications using formal models (frameworks) and standardized prefabricated components, much in the same way as in other mature areas of engineering such as mechanical engineering and electronics. These guidelines have been used to develop Component-based Design of Software for Embedded Systems (COMDES). The paper gives an overview of the COMDES framework, followed by a presentation of a generic component types, such as function blocks, activities and function units. The execution of function units is discussed in the context of a newly developed execution model, i.e. timed-multitasking, which has been extended to distributed embedded systems.
This paper presents a visual based localization
mechanism for a legged robot. Our proposal, fundamented
on a probabilistic approach, uses a precompiled topological
map where natural landmarks like doors or ceiling lights
are recognized by the robot using its on-board camera.
Experiments have been conducted using the AIBO Sony
robotic dog showing that it is able to deal with noisy sensors
like vision and to approximate world models representing
indoor ofce environments. The two major contributions of
this work are the use of this technique in legged robots, and
the use of an active camera as the main sensor
